Notes

Cost of huts contains also a half board - breakfast and usually 3 courses dinner. At least once we had even four courses. For that reason, we spent around 15 EUR / person on lunch = meal + beer. On top of that, if you have membership in any of the Alpine clubs, such as https://www.alpenverein.at/ or any other branch, you will get 12-15 EUR discount in all of the huts in this itinerary.

The parking in Interbichl is very convinient. It's fairly big, I would say maybe 50-80 cars and also fairly cheap to leave the car there long term - which we need to hike the whole trail in several days. It costs 15EUR for a week. Bargain if you ask me in Alps. We arrived pretty eary, around 8:30 because I was afraid of how much packed it's going to be but the parking was fairly empty even though it was July and Saturday. It may be the bad weather though. I would still try to arrive early if doing it again never the less.

Bonn-Matreier Hütte

There is a beautiful view from the Bonn-Matreier Hütte 1000m down to the valley and mountains on the other side. Dinner was 2 options of main meal in 3 courses menu. Soup, main course and an ice cream. Main meal were dumplings with cheese or chilli con carne.

Even though the trail is "only" 9 kilometers on paper, it's very rough 9 kilometers. First half is "black" with several sections with steel cables and lot of steep ascent and descent. At the end of the day I felt like hiking double the distance. But the views are incredible.

Badener Hütte

We had private room in Badener Hütte which was really nice. The hut was a but "run-down" inside but nothing horrible. The dinner was also a bit weaker comparing to the other huts but I can understand it since there is no cable car or anything.

Innerer Knorrkogel (2882 m)

This is in my opinion the best view along the whole route. On one side beautiful Schlatenkees glacier with Neue Preger Hutte on the other glacier lake and view of Gross Glockner far away. It's simply stunning and even though you don't have to climb this small side quest, it's well worth it!

On the way to the Neue Prager Hutte to spend the night, there is a interesting "museum". Old Prager Hutte was repaired and made into a showcase of how old hutts looked like. You can go inside and see it yourself.

Alte Prager Hütte

It was a bit tricky to find you you can actually go inside of the hut, the door seemed to be closed but it only made sense so in case of bad weather, it doesn't damage the hut inside. You can come in a "hallway" and take some fotos inside of the cabin. There is glass separating the hallway from the rest of the hut but it didn't matter.

Neue Prager Hütte

We had a shared bedroom for 6 people in Neue Prager Hütte. The dinner was amazing. Salad and a huge main meal. Hard to describe, it was some mashed potatoes with cabbage and minced meat, super tasty but we couldn't finish it. And a very nice desert, something like tiramisu. Apart from dinner, we also had a snack in the afternoon, house sausage which we were really lucky to share in 2 people because it was actually 4 sausages. I only regret I didn't take any pictures. Apart from great food, the view from the hut is just incredible. You are directly next to the glacier. People are also using it as a base to climb the glacier. Only slightly inconvenient part about the hut was dry toilet. I understand why, the environmental impact, lack of water and everything...just took some getting used to it. So keep that in mind :)

Get on a bus at Matreier Tauernhaus

Matreier Tauernhaus

Today we are picking car from the parking where you left it 5 days ago. To do so, you can take 2 bus connections, roughly 2 hours ride together with some waiting in between. The buses you need are 955 from Matreier Tauernhaus to Matrei in Osttirol and then switch to 951 from Matrei to the parking lot, last bus stop Prägraten a. G. Ströden. The bus goes around 5 times a day so make sure to check the bus schedules on the internet.
