Trip retro

This itinerary is designed to fit into one week and two weekends around it so you need only 5 days of vacation for it. The main part is Alta Via 1, though not in it's full length. We are doing the larger part in the north and skipping few days at the end in the south. Instead, we visit several famous places in Dolomites while we are in the area - Tre Cimes and Seceda among others.

Stop by at Tre Cime di Lavaredo

Parcheggio Rifugio Auronzo (P2)

Before we start Alta Via 1 hike we stopped for a day at Tre Cime. To get there, or rather to be able to park there, you need to book your parking spot as the place is extremely famous and busy. Parking costs 40EUR and can be booked here https://auronzo.info/en/parking-tre-cime-di-lavaredo/. If you don't have reservation they will not let you pass the "toll" house several kilometers before the parking lot. If you didn't manage to book the parking, you can park elsewhere and take a shuttle bus but that will be longer and even though the parking costs so much, it may cost you even more if you count with the cost of the bus and paid parking elsewhere anyway.

Walk to Dreizinnenhutte / Rifugio Antonio

Dreizinnenhütte - Rifugio Antonio Locatelli/Sepp Innerkofler

From the parking lot we walked around Tre Cime all the way to the other side of the mountain to Dreizinnenhütte. It takes few hours, the trail is easy and views are incredible. No surprise it's so popular.

Belluno

We spent the night in Beluno. There you can leave a car for the week for free and take a bus to the start of Alta Via 1. It's also a charming little town to chill before the big trip.

Park your car in Belluno

Piazzale Associazione Bellunese Volontari del Sangue

We left our car in a large parking lot in Beluno. It's free so it's great for leaving your car there for a week while you hike back.

Depending on the timing, you may need several transfers to get from Belluno o Lago di Braises where Alta Via 1 starts. From Belluno, it doesn't really matter, we took regional bus to Longarone and from there Flixbus to Dobiacio. It really doesn't matter, only part which is fixed is bus from Dobiacio to Lago di Braises. There is a bus 442 going there you want to take (no other options). You should arrive to Lago di Braises ideally sometime early in the afternoon so you have the rest of the day to hike up to Seekofelhütte.

Get bus to Lago di Braises

Pragser Wildsee - Lago di Braies, Italy

The lake itself is very popular, busy and beautiful. If you have time, you can spend some time around it. If not, don't worry as the path goes around to anyway.

From the lake the trail starts to climb all the way up to Seekofelhütte. Be aware of the thunderstorms which are very common in Dolomites in the afternoon. We hit one as well and since you will be hiking this first day in the afternoon, the sooner you reach the hut the better.

Seekofelhütte

Seekofelhütte is nice small hut with several rooms with bunk beds. We had a shared bedroom for 4 people which was nice. Great dinner but no showers.

Lavarellahütte

Night at Lavarellahütte was nice. The hut was nicely equipped and clean, the room was a bit large for maybe 10 people so it was a bit more difficult to get a good sleep but bunk beds were comfortable. We even had a balcony where one could chill, read and enjoy the afternoon.

This is a long day with lot of walk and altitude change. Very doable if you start early though. There are three longer climbs you need to overcome and no place hut to get a lunch from so make sure you pack enough food and water.

Rifugio Averau

Rifugio Averau was maybe the best hut along the road where I stayed. I got lucky and got assigned bed by the window which was really nice as the room was really hot during the night and I could sleep with the open window. But the best part was dinner. It was typical three course Italian dinner with pasta as a first course, meat as the second and then desert. You could choose from multiple options and it was really more like a regular restaurant dinner than mountain hut. I had pasta bolognese, fish and apple pie, all super tasty. Plus Vino de Casa and my night was just awesome! Also the view from the hut is incredible. Just amazing. I was so happy I manage to book a spot at this hut.

Rifugio Passo Staulanza

Rifugio Passo Staulanza was probably the worst hut but still not bad. Just because other huts were so amazing, it was a tough competition. It's in the valley, by the road so there is no view and it has large bedroom for maybe 20 people. But I had no issue and it was still good enough.

Rifugio Vazzoler

Rifugio Vazzoler was also really nice. Quite a specific photogenic looking building, they have great house wine and surrounding cliffs are stunning. Good dinner and we had small bedroom for 4 people which was amazing.

the goal of the day is to get down to the valley and catch a bus to Belluno. This is the "end" of our Alta Via 1 path. Alternative plan is to continue Alta Via 1 for 2 more days. I instead wanted to visit Seceda and Val Gardena.

Col Raiser

Seceda cable car can be ridiculously expensive. It has dynamic pricing and it can - and most often it really does - cost up to 75 EUR per person. What we did instead is to take Col Raiser cable car which is only 4km away from Seceda and costs half of it. You can walk from there to Seceda, it's a very nice walk and at least you don't just ride up, take a photo and go down immediately. I was really happy with this choice.
