Visit Kok-Tobe Hill
Kok-Tobe (1130 m)
Kok-Tobe Hill is a small hill on the side of Almaty with a small theme park. We rode a roler-coaster for 2 EUR. There is nice view over the city and the mountains which surrounds it.

2026-06-26 · Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan
This is a a 2 week itinerary around Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The biggest part is Kyrgyzstan as we wanted to focus on the nature the most and Kyrgyzstan has amazing mountains, lakes and everything in between. It's a road trip where you need to rent 4x4 car. Nothing super serious is needed though. We rented Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max. Bigger Chinese SUV with 4x4, but it was just a regular car. You don't need a proper Jeep/Toyota Landcruiser for this itinerary. I would not go with a sedan or non-4x4 car though. Several sections, especially on the border with Tajikistan were with smaller river crossings and roads in general in Kyrgyzstan were often in a bad shape. In general this itinerary is focused around nature, hiking, cities and some history sight seeing. And good bit of driving, so count with that. Special not to mobile apps you will find useful. We tried Google Maps for navigation and it failed us 3 times where it led us through much longer and/or worse roads. After that we switched to Yandex Maps which had much better navigation. Then however, have some offline maps as well as the phone connection is very spotty. And finally, for "Uber alternative" in Almaty we used Yandex Go. You can have it for food delivery as well. I would 100% recommend use it when getting from the Airport in Almaty to the center as local taxi drivers will scam you as at any other airport.

Apart from Kok-Tobe Hill, you can visit couple of other places in the city. There is a ortodox church, you can admire the old architecture and war monuments.

Finding a car rental in Almaty which would rent us 4x4 drive and allow us to cross the border to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan was not easy. We contacted maybe a dozen of places we found out of which 2 looked like could help us. https://ironhorsenomads.com/ and https://royalautotravel.kz/en. Ironhorsenomads looked a bit more established but when we decided to book we were too late and all the cars for our dates were rented out. We went with Royalautotravel then.
At the end it was a good choice. Even though the process of renting was a bit funny, it worked out well at the end. All the communication with the rental company was through WhatsApp. They didn't want any deposit which we though was a good sign that it's not a complete scam. On the day of our car rental we met with them in a car wash, apparently that's how they operate. We signed a standard contract, left a deposit, paid for the rental and left. Car was great, around 40,000km on the clock.

Charyn Canyon is a national park couple of hours from Almaty. It felt a bit like a small version of Grand Canyon. It's an easy visit. You pay small entrance fee at the entrance, can visit the visitor's center and then hike down the canyon to the river. It's around 2 km with small descent down and then back again. You can take a shuttle "bus" with a small fee. Cash only.

On the way to our stay near Kolsay lakes we stoped at Black Canyon. It's directly on the road there, no entrance fee, you can check the canyon from viewing platform so even no need to walk too far. It's a nice stop for photos or refreshments.

Kolsay Lakes
We wanted to hike to the second Kolsay lake which proved to be quite a challenge. It's essentially half-day trek. You park on a large parking lot near the first Kolsay lake. Parking was free and no entrance was paid even at the lake. If you want to hike to the second lake as we did, stay on the right side of the first lake as the left side was closed - even though there was supposed to be a trail as well. If you don't want to hike to the second lake, you can stay at the first one, rent a boat or just chill there. Anyway, we hiked to the second one which proved to be quite challenging as we though we would be faster. We managed to get there, had a 10 mins break and then head back to the first lake because you need to leave the car in time. The border crossing between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan closes at 5pm, so depending if you plan to grab a lunch on the way there or stop for anything, you ideally want to leave between 1-2pm from the Kolsay lakes. So I recommend starting early in the morning. It's a very beautiful hike though

The road to the border crossing and even after it was really nice, paved, in a good condition. Make sure to arrive with some spare time. Border crossing closes at 5pm. Looking back, this border crossing was the smoothes from the three we did during our trip but yet, we waited around 45mins before they started processing us. It took maybe 20 mins to get through the border. All together ±1 hour to get across. Good thing is the view from the border which is very nice.

Karakol (Каракол)
Karakol is "fairly" large city with lot of restaurants, couple of super markets, ATMs and many other services. Good for re-supplying what you are missing. Important note is also about money, not surprisingly you need cash in Kyrgyzstan. What surprised us though was that we were able to withdraw from local ATMs without any fee. We tried Wise as well as Revolut. There is a lot of different ATMs near Globus super market in the town center.

Ala-Kul
Ala-Kul
We wanted to visit Ala Kul lake because pictures we saw on the internet were just incredible. The issue is that normally it's a 3 day trek to get there. What we found out though is that there are couple of local companies which can take you part of the trip with a proper 4x4 drive. We found this company https://www.karakolguide.com/alakul_karakol_oneday.html which we contacted which did exactly that. They picked us early in the morning in Karakol, we boarded this old 4x4 van and headed out. The journey took maybe 2 hours, the road was really off-road. Sometimes driving through a river, huge holes, so definitely not something to try with your own car. Anyway, they drove us all the way to the start of a climb to the lake. From there it's 1,100m of ascend. You start at 2,500m above sea level and end up at 3,600 so the altitude is definitely a factor. Being fit is highly recommended since this is like 4-5th day of the trip and first day of such an altitude. So your body is not used to that yet. Anyway, take it slow, bring lot of food and water and then it's definitely doable. Once you are by the lake you can rest a bit and if you still have some energy, you can climb a bit further by the trail for even better photos of the lake and glaciers behind. After that, you hike back down to the valley, you can get a tea/snacks at the camp in the valley. You hop on the car and by 6 you are back at your car in Karakol.

Car - Whole day trip to Ala Kul lake → Tong (Тон)
Car · 140 km · 1h 58m
This ride was definitely difficult. When we crossed the border from Kazakhstan, we were greeted by a brand new road, freshly paved. The road from KArakol along Issyk Kul lake is the complete oposit. Depending on when you are doing this trip, it may have changed but when we rode there, the road was pretty much missing. What it looked like was they were putting down a new pavement but in a stile that they stripped the old one completely and tou drive over stones and dirt only. And there is a lot of traffic and the segments without any pavement are very very long - tens of kilometers. We were really happy for high SUV because several times we took a pothole which was not visible in high-ish speed. Luckily the car survived without any issue.
Tong (Тон)
We stayed in a b&b place near the lake. The weather was not great, but if it would be better, there are beaches nearby, you can swim in the lake and it could be a really nice place.

Arabel plateau is an interesting place. Road to it is surprisingly well maintained because there is a large gold mine. While riding there you will meet many rock trucks but the road is wide and we didn't have any issue while passing them. There are many many hairpins on the road. When we were nearly at the top, we face a dense fog/clouds. When we climbed all the way to the top, we drove for 10 mins and then the fog cleared out and we saw the vast plateau with mountains surrounding it in the distance. We hiked there for maybe an hour but then wind and cold caught with us and we returned to the car and drove back. It's definitely an interesting place to visit.

Road to Song Kol lake has two parts. First one is in a decent shape. Paved and ok to drive on. Don't forget to take gas while you can. In the second half of the road, there are no gas stations. The last petrol station is at the roundabout after the village of Кочкор. We had to return from 20 mins away there because we realised there is no other way t get petrol. The second half starts when you start to climb to the mountains (where the lake is). The pavement ends and the last 40-50 kilometers you will drive slowly or in a bit of risk of damaging the car. Views on the way are great though. First to the valleys around and then onto the lake when you arrive there.

Song Kol Lake
We spent 2 nights at the Song Kol lake. On the first day you arrive pretty late because the road to the lake is pretty long. The next one we did a horse riding and chilling around the lake and walk around the hills surrounding the lake.

After we left Song Kol we started our long ride to the border of Tajikistan for the best hiking of the whole trip. Anyway, after Song Kol we accidentally drove what Google calls "The Best Scenic Road in Kyrgyzstan". It's stretch of road between Jangy-Talap and Kazarman villages which goes through mountains. The road is ok, you will mostly meet bikers and barely any bikes. There is nothing there for tens and tens of kilometers so make sure you have enough gas. We were caught by surprise by the views and the beauty along the way. Google Maps are not wrong. Hard to judge as we didn't see the whole country but certainly the road is one of the best we drove on in Kyrgyzstan. And I am not talking about the pavement as there is none :-D

This is just incredible hike. It's around half day trip, not difficult distance or climbing wise but the altitude is the difficult part. But it's all worth it when you climb all the way to the Traveller's Pass. The view from there is unbelievably beautiful. You are standing there, watching the 6000-7000m peaks around you, glaciers, it's incredible.
