Trip retro

This is quite packed 18 days trip through several countries and cities in south east Asia. Some of the trips within are optional and can be skipped to make it more chill. It certainly won't be fore everybody but it will allow you to squeeze the most out of your vacation days. It starts and end in Guangzhou. The reason for this is that it's a major Airport in south China with lot of cheap connections to Europe and/or rest of the Asia. That means you can get there easily but also get to other airports in the region. Apart from the strategic location for further travel, it's also a good starting point to visit some other places in Chine since we ar already there. From China, we are visiting Bali where we stay roughly one week. We spend time in more touristic south of Bali but also in the north which is much calmer and great for scuba diving. After Bali, we go to Hanoi. We spend few days in the city and do two days trip to Nihn Binh and two day trips. We finish the trip in Hong Kong. Why Hong Kong? Cheap flights and it's an hour train ride back to Guangzhou. And such a cool city, mix of London, Singapore and Shanghai.

Guangzhou (广州市)

Loading map…

Activities

  • · Visit Canton Tower
  • · Walk around Shamian island

Visit Canton Tower

Canton Tower Road, 510310, Chigang Sub-District, Haizhu District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong, China

We had the whole afternoon after the arrival so we spend the half of the day exploring Guangzhou. First stop was Canton Tower. You can get to the top but we didn't do it. It's around 20 USD for the observation deck on the top of the tower. But even just walking by the river in the park under the tower was great.

Walk around Shamian island

Shamian Subdistrict (沙面街道)

As from Wikipedia "... Shamian is a sandbank island in the Liwan District of Guangzhou... The territory was divided into two concessions given to France and the United Kingdom by the Qing government in the 19th century." Because of this, there is a lot of old architecture and green and it's a very pleasant walk. There is also a funny Harry Potter themed Starbucks there which is worth of few photos. Overall it's a good place to finish your first (probably tiring) day in Guangzhou.

Guangzhou (广州市)

I would recommend staying near a metro station in the wider center of the city. You will go to the south railway station twice + any trips in the city you want to do. So ideally anywhere on the metro between the city center and South Railway station.

This may look like a crazy trip on the first sight but it's actually very doable. If you want to chill, you had a difficult flight or something, feel free to move it to the next day or skip it completely. I would advice against the second option though because Yangshuo is so amazing. Anyway, make sure you create the train tickets in advance. At minimum 2 weeks in advance as it's when the tickets go to sale and they can sell out very quickly. For this trip you want tickets from Guangzhounan(Guangzhou South) to Yangshuo, ideally early in the morning. Even though it's several hundreds of kilometres, the bullet train takes less than 2 hours.

Day trip to Yangshuo and Xingping

Yangshuo Railway Station

Yanghsuo is an area south of major city Guilin which is known for its dramatic karst mountain landscape. Because you can reach it easily with bullet train from Ghangzhou, it's a great place for one-two day trip. We did it as one day - morning there, evening back - but originally we wanted to spend the night there. The train tickets back the second day sold out however so we went at least for one day. You dan do it either way. Yangshuo train station is 30 mins outside of the town so once you reach the train station you can 1) take a taxi 2) take a bus to the city. You will see a long queue of people in from. You need to buy a ticket in the cashier next to it and then join the queue. Try to be as fast as possible when leaving the train as many many people go to Yangshuo with the bullet train. You have two options, where to go. You can either go directly to Yangshuo or - what we did - go first to Xingping Ancient Town.

Walk through Xingping village and climb Laozhai Hill

Laozhai Hill (355 m)

You arrive to the "main bus station" in xingping. Xingping is more like a village, you can walk around it end-end in maybe like 20 mins. After that we climbed Laozhai Hill. It's not an easy climb which requires some level of fitness. It was raining a bit when we were there, it was a bit muddy and some parts very pretty steep and narrow. Few ladders and lot of stairs. Nothing dangerous though. The view from the top is breathtaking though and 100% worth it in my opinion

After Xingping, take a bus to Yangshuo. You simply go back to the main bus station and catch a bus marked as Yangshuo.

Walk through Yangshuo West Street

Yangshuo West Street

Yangshuo is larger city comparing to Xingping. The bus will drop you off near West Street which is like the main street going through the center. You can walk it to the end and back. You can grab a lunch there in one of the restaurants.

Rent a scooter and ride the 10 mile gallery

Yulong River, Guilin, Yangshuo County, Guangxi, China

Ten Mile Gallery are several roads in between Yangshuo and Yulong river which have beautiful crast landscape all around. There are several stops, caves or views you can admire. You can read more about it here https://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/guangxi/yangshuo/ten-mile-gallery.htm. I would recommended to rent a scooter to drive through it. Technically you could do it with a regular bicycle as well but it's actually not that short and especially if it's hot, I would go with a scooter. We rented one for 150 yuan at the end of West Street. It was completely ok for 2 people.

Shenzhen (深圳市)

You can use this day as a second day in Yanghuo. We didn't get the train tickets back so we did it only as a day trip and this day went to quick trip to Shenzhen, major city just 30 mins from Ghuangzhou. It was very hot so we only wandered around the center and visited Lianhuashan Park.

You can use Grab (local version of Uber) in Bali. It does work reliable only in the major tourist hubs though like Denpasar or Ubud. Since we wanted to move around the whole island we arranged a private driver to drive us around. I did some research and we used https://balihiredriver.com/ at the end. We agreed with them over Whatsapp on the exact schedule and price. The driver drove us in the first two days from Denpasar to Pemuteran and then the fourh day from Pemuteran to Ubud. From there we used Grab. Those 3 days cost us 150 EUR all together. Car for the whole day, driver, gas, parking, everything.

Stop at Pura Taman Ayun temple

Pura Taman Ayun

Since we had the private driver, we could stop wherever we wanted to. First stop on the way north was Pura Taman Ayun. Looking back, it was first temple we properly visited and it was one of the nicest we saw while at Bali.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces is a great stop along the way north from Denpasar. It's a pretty large rice field you can walk around for 1-2 hours. There is a small entrance fee as anywhere in Bali. It will start to get anoying the longer you stay at Bali but here it's worth it.

Munduk / Red Coral

On the way to Pemuteran, we hiked around Munduk waterfalls. There is a circular trail which leads around several waterfalls and starts here https://mapy.com/s/bafavokube. You have to pay for each waterfall separately, so after 3-4 we skipped few, but at least several are well worth of visiting. We really enjoyed Red Colar, Lubuham and Melanting waterfalls.

Pemuteran

Pemuteran was probably highlight of our whole stay at Bali. It's on the very north, you need to drive there for several hours but that makes it way less touristic than south Bali. Everything was cheaper, food, accommodation and there was way less people than for example in Ubud. And sea was also amazing. Great for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Scuba diving to Biorock Pemuteran

Biorock Information Center

Biorock is a very interesting project. It's essentially a garden of corals near the Pemuteran beach. They have been "growing" corals there for many years and it's a great place for super easy shore dive - which we did in the morning.

The next day we spent with a whole-day trip to Nusa Penida. It's a very famous small island east of Bali. We booked it through our driver who gave us some discount but you can book it through any hotel or tour agency. Our driver took us to the harbour, put us in a ferry to the island. There another driver picked us up and drove us around some of the main highlights of Nusa Penida. It was very crowded - as expected - but if you don't focus on the amount of people, it was nice.

Star Ferry Public Transport Interchange

Star Ferry runs from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central pier. It goes every 20 mins or so and you will get a great boat ride with view over the Victoria Harbour for around 1 USD. It's so great we took several rides, once even just back and forth since it was empty. Great way to start your HK trip.

Visit Victoria Peak in the night

Victoria Peak (552 m)

We visited Victoria Peak for the first time in the evening of the first day in HK and I was happy we did. Even though the visibility was not the perfect, we could still see the city at night. At first, we tried to reach the top on foot but we quickly decided against it. It was really warm and we didn't find a nice way to the top so we decided to take the cable car instead. It's called Victoria Peak Tram and it's not expensive. Round trip costs 15USD and offers great view over the city and funny feelings in the steepest parts of the track.
